CHARACTER
Character Name: Glacius
Character Age: Never stated in canon--though it's a safe guess that his species is a fairly long-lived one, and he is fully matured.
Canon: Killer Instinct 2013
Canon Point: Season 1 (Neutral Ending)
History: Wiki & Character History.
Personality: From his cold exterior, fierce visage, and upbringing as a fighter, one might assume Glacius to be a walking hazard just waiting for someone to pick a fight with him. The reality is that this couldn't be further from the truth. This alien is not bloodthirsty or even aggressive--he is a very neutral, reserved being who fits the archetype of an alien of ice to a T. Glacius is cool-headed, patient, and is very good at remaining in control of his emotions. His fuse is basically non-existant; even someone nagging and harping on him isn't likely to provoke any sort of volatile reaction, though he may quietly express irritation or try to extricate himself from the situation. He prefers to be left to his own affairs, and will return that favor if someone grants him the same. In fact, despite his prowess Glacius only seems to fight when it the last option available to him. Shortly after arriving on earth, both the police and Ultratech discover Glacius and hold him at gun point. Rather than engage in combat with the small group, which would easily end in Glacius' favor, he allows himself to be taken prisoner by them. (We see the exact same disposition in Glacius' ancestor from KI2. He allows himself to be taken prisoner by the followers of Gargos, despite the fact that he probably had more than enough combat prowess to defeat them and earn his freedom). Although he does state that learning to fight is fascinating and the feeling of combat is somewhat exhilarating, Glacius has no love of fighting, bloodshed, or causing undue pain. He dislikes the thought of harming other beings and repeatedly tries to get other contestants in the tournament to withdraw before he is forced to grievously injure them. Should they not, he just does his best to give them a quick, merciful end by knocking them unconscious or similarly disabling them--cruelty is not in his nature.

This is not to say that Glacius won't fight, ever. It just so happens that the fastest way to evoke his aggression is not by threatening him (perhaps it's because he fancies himself as more than a match for most that take issue with him), but by threatening those close to him. He has a fiercely loyal streak underneath his cool exterior, and Ultratech sees this firsthand both when they try to keep him from returning to his home planet and when they threaten the safety of his species by trying to steal away his technology. Glacius subjects himself to a long string of battles with other highly-skilled competitors just to keep Ultratech from discovering his home planet and potentially subjecting the rest of his species to the same torments--and he does the same when he returns to earth, this time intending to keep humanity safe as well despite the hardships they put him through. These battles involve no shortage of pain and struggle for Glacius himself, but he puts himself through it to make sure the people he cares about are safe. This loyalty, while primarily felt towards his own kin/species, is not reserved solely for them. Though befriending this reclusive and secretive alien can take some doing because of his upbringing and history, once someone consistently respects his space and supports him it can lay the foundation for a deeper friendship. At that point he has shown the propensity to care deeply for someone regardless of their species. If he angers someone, he will feel guilty about it, apologize, and seek to set it right. If they are in peril, he will defend them however he can--even if the odds are against him. If something should happen to upset them, Glacius happy to listen to their problems and then try his best to sympathize with them.

On the flip side, once someone does go far enough to get Glacius to regard them as an enemy, he becomes constantly suspicious of them and has little quarrel about picking physical fights with them. And, unfortunately, this suspicion is the way he reacts to humans, at least when he initially meets them. Being immediately taken prisoner by Ultratech upon his landing on Earth has left a sour note in Glacius' mind. He is now incredibly wary of humankind as a whole, both because of what they subjected him to and because of the warnings of his ancestor to avoid contact with them. Still, it's not impossible for him to get over a grudge, as long as the individual can prove themselves worthy of redemption--and he hasn't given up on humanity as a whole yet, despite his species' belief that we are a race of unreasoning brutality. This is a very important aspect of his character, put on full display when he returns to earth a second time to safeguard his technology: despite his species' belief that humans are an unreasonably brutal race, the alien is still doing his best to look out for what he feels is a young, misguided species.

Also of interest is Glacius' attitude towards humans, which is complicated, and has fluctuated many times due to his series of involvements with them. As previously stated, the history books of his people warn of humanity's unreasoning brutality, and Glacius himself is perhaps even more directly affected by what transpired so long ago because it was his ancestor that suffered their hands. Despite this more personal investment, the alien's patient and trusting nature kept him from writing humankind off right from the start. When he crash-landed on earth and was ultimately discovered while hunting for supplies to repair his ship, Ultratech told him that his confinement would be for his own good... and he trusted them and allowed them to take him captive rather than fleeing or fighting like many others of his species very likely would have.

You can imagine how Ultratech's betrayal of his trust and all the subsequent horrors they subjected him to might have shaken that trust down to its very foundations. The alien regretted it deeply and would have happily forsaken any return to our planet from there on out--but the trip back to his homeworld and the time he spent there allowed the memories of the evils he faced on earth to slowly fade. When he was ultimately tasked with the mission of returning to earth to safeguard his lost technology he accepted it readily, seemingly ready to give humanity another chance.

It is lucky for humanity that Glacius' spirit is incorruptible and that his patience is vast; despite his history with humans, he still does not believe them to be inherently evil. Of course he is an alien, so there are points of contention or confusion that he experiences when attempting to deal with them--their seemingly natural proclivity towards conflict and violence being chief among them, given that he is of a species that values loyalty to its own very highly. He has witnessed much corruption in his visits to earth, but he knows it is a poor practice to judge the many based on the few. He views humanity as a young species; misguided often, perhaps, but he still believes they can grow... and that if they can, they have the same chance as any other species to achieve greatness. This belief is rare for his species, and it--coupled with Glacius' sense of honor and chivalry-- is what is driving him to make sure humanity has that chance. He's not going to be openly buddy-buddy with anyone right off the bat and will never openly subject himself to humanity's whims again--it is the price of his suffering at the hands of Ultratech--but he still strives for peace and balance between them and his race despite the misdeeds done to him, and does not exempt humans from his protective nature if they prove themselves to be worthy of it. Towards most he strives to act as a sort of quiet mentor; gently trying to nudge most of the people he encounters along what he perceives to be a more honorable path, while offering a sort of stolid encouragement to them.

Some other side notes: the technology that Glacius’ kind possesses is so advanced that he is actually almost naïve as to how current human technology works—for example, he sees a barbecue grill and assumes it is an “altar to a fire god”. He also seems to have a slight curious streak and likes to learn (especially when it comes to improving his combat skills), as he frequently asks questions of the various fighters he encounters in the tournament. These questions range from simply asking the fighters about their origins to wanting to know about the indigenous species of Earth, showing that Glacius likes to educate himself about the various people and races he encounters.

Glacius' society seems to also have imbued some code of honor into him, which seems to revolve around serving his people. As stated before he is fiercely loyal to his species, and returns to Earth despite what he endured previously in order to protect their technology. If his people are wronged or harmed, Glacius is expected to take revenge on those responsible--the one instance where he is expected to be merciless. This sense of duty to kin seems to be felt universally by Glacius' species, as while he is being held prisoner he states that his people will stop at nothing to bring him home. In addition to this code of honor, he also seems to follow a code of law created by his people, known as the 88 Decrees; though all of these Decrees have not currently been detailed in canon, it is at least known that some of them deal with the safeguarding of his people's technology--hence why his mission to earth to recover his lost technology is of such importance to him. This goes double for him as a galactic marshal, as it is his duty to uphold these Decrees. Also, His species' religion is not elaborated on very much, but they at least believe in a higher power, as Glacius often uses "the Makers" very much like a human would use the name "God".

Abilities:
Abilities/Strengths:

  • Fighting Prowess: Glacius received extensive hand-to-hand combat training back on his homeworld and honed it further when he was held prisoner on earth and fighting for his freedom. Unlike other fighters, however, he doesn’t need to be in close to his opponent in order to do damage to them. He can utilize his unique abilities (see the "Transformation" bullet point) to strike from a fair distance away; he will then either follow up with close range attacks or force his opponent to run an obstacle course of deadly hails and shatters if they want to approach him. He also hits like a truck; his strongest blows are fully capable of knocking his opponents off of their feet and lifting them into the air.

  • Transformation: Glacius possesses the ability to morph his body into different shapes. This includes--but is certainly not limited to--liquidizing himself into a puddle and quickly moving across the ground (this can then lead seamlessly into an uppercut to strike an off-guard opponent), or morphing his hands, arms, and legs into weapons. These transformations add considerable length to his limbs, allowing him to strike an opponent that might consider themselves out of his reach. He cab also generate a jagged ball of ice, which he seems to be able to control as an extension of his body even though it is no longer attached to him—“tossing” it at his opponents to keep them at bay. Although Glacius technically is a shapeshifter, he is not likely to take another individual's shape, but rather to morph parts of his body into forms that make him more effective at a given task. I refer to alteration of his form as "shifting" (and when he shifts back into his natural form I refer to that as "reverting").

  • Control Over Ice: This is similar to his transformation ability, but essentially, Glacius has a limited control over ice and can use it to aid his offensive and defensive capabilities. For example, he can jam his hands into the ground (it doesn’t matter if it’s snow and ice, solid rock, or even metal-- he has some way of affecting the terrain regardless of what it’s made of), and large, sharp, and very solid spears of ice will erupt from the ground in front of him to pierce or strike his target. He can also achieve a similar affect by just stomping on the ground, or even with a simple gesture. The force with which he strikes the ground seems to affect the strength, size, and force of the ice spears generated.

  • NOTE: This short video highlights pretty much all of the above offensive abilities. Also, Glacius can also use his Transformation and Control Over Ice abilities non-offensively; for example, the cold he can generate at will can be used to numb pain (as seen in the comics), and thus it can be assumed that it can do just about anything else cold is used for medicinally, such as controlling a fever or reducing swelling. He can use his ice to protect someone, typically by forming a shield or cover out of it (also seen in the comics).

  • Metaphysical: Glacius' species is very in tune with the energies that course through their body and can use these forces to various ends. The most common method of channeling his energy is via Motes of light; he can use these to deliver a powerful blast of energy to knock any would-be threat away from him, or to open a sort of psychic link between him and a chosen individual (though this is a much rarer use of the power). He has other offensive uses for this energy; for example, when Glacius has built up enough energy during combat, he can utilize it into a Shadow Move, which is a far more damaging version of his normal attacks. He can also alter the energy flow of his body to allow for limited levitation.

  • Durability/Instinct Mode: Glacius’ strange body structure and composition makes him incredibly tough and able to survive an amount of punishment beyond that of normal combatants. He also has a binary vascular system which means he can bleed much more than any human before risk of entering shock becomes a possibility. Additionally, Glacius has another means of increasing his durability by entering his Instinct Mode. In this state, the air around him distorts slightly from all the energy he is exuding, and he gains added plates of ice armor that make him even tougher and able to power through hits without flinching to launch his own attacks. These ice plates can regenerate as long as he is in Instinct Mode, but the mode does not last long and they dissipate as soon as he is out of it.

  • Healing Ice: Seen in the comics—if Glacius is seriously injured, he must seek out a patch of ice and snow in freezing temperatures and submerge himself almost entirely in it. The amount of time that the healing process takes depends on the severity of his injuries. After the process has completed, Glacius will reawaken and be good as new; he can use this to survive injuries that would otherwise kill him. However, while he is healing he enters a sort of torpor, and this makes him entirely vulnerable while the process is actually occurring.

Weaknesses:

  • Mobility: Glacius is very much a slow-and-steady being. He hates being rushed, and he rarely runs or sprints, so it can be easy for most characters to outpace him (though his walking speed is fairly quick given his long strides). Even his dashes utilize his metaphysical powers to do a sort of hovering slide rather than a traditional type of movement. However, one of his fighting techniques involves using a forward shoulder charge for a sudden burst of movement to traverse ground quickly, which can catch opponents off guard or help him position himself.

  • Aversion to Fire: Being a creature of ice that thrives in the cold, Glacius can be considered weak to fire; it doesn’t burn right through him like a burst of fire would do to normal ice, but it can melt through his outer skin eventually. For example, in one of the comics he is trying to shelter a character named Cinder (think of the Human Torch, but permanently on fire) from a sprinkler system that has been set off. Glacius forms a shield of ice from his arms over Cinder to protect him from the water, but comments that Cinder is beginning to burn through him. It is also worth noting that the only thing allowing Glacius to survive in above-freezing temperatures is a complex system of technological glyphs woven into his icy skin; if that is damaged, his outer skin will eventually begin to melt once temperatures get too high. Since both layers of Glacius' anatomy function in tandem with one another, melting away his icy skin has extreme complications for him. He will be incapacitated by pain as it essentially feels like he's been skinned alive, and his gills will eventually dry up, making asphyxiation inevitable. Without the support and covering of that icy skin, it is also likely that his gill arches will suffer breaks all on their own. I could go on, but yeah, fire--or anything that forces that inner layer to function on its own-- is bad news.

  • Mortality: In a tournament like Killer Instinct, fighters die all the time--and Glacius, despite his incredible combat prowess, unique abilities, and toughness, is not immune to that. It takes a ton to put this alien down and he's an opponent you should never take lightly, but he can still be killed should he sustain too much damage.

  • Out of Place: Though Glacius' position as galactic marshal seems to involve a lot of work in external affairs and he enjoys getting off-planet to explore, he suffers heavily when forced apart from his own species--particularly for lengthy periods of time. He also initially is pretty bad at interacting with species outside of his own, since secrecy has always been in his nature. It takes a lot of work for him to befriend individuals outside of his species, and even more for him to open up and begin to trust them.

Flaws: Despite the fact that Glacius is about as neutral as people come in both demeanor and alignment, there are a few reasons why he could have been swept up by the Door; the most noteworthy of these reasons is an act that Glacius himself detests with all of his being. In the final match of the Killer Instinct tournament, the ice alien was faced with a fiery convict named Cinder, and was told by the corrupt chairman of Ultratech that if he wanted to successfully win his freedom he would have to kill him. Ultratech was trying to take advantage of the peaceful nature that Glacius had displayed--they were hoping that he would refuse to take the convict's life, giving Cinder the chance to kill him and prove humanity to be the superior race. Glacius knew that he could have just not played their game, could've given up and let myself be killed... and it probably would've been easier for him to do so than to inflict the pain that he did. But there was too much at stake.

For Glacius also knew that if he hadn't persisted, Ultratech would've taken his crashed ship and turned their eyes to the rest of his species... and the Killer Instinct tournament would have endured. His loyalty to his people and his desire to keep others from suffering like he had lead him to take Cinder's life, a fact that he still regrets to this day--so even if he others might not see this as a flaw, Glacius certainly does.

Another flaw that Glacius possesses would be that he can initially be quite mistrustful of other beings. This is covered in the Personality and Weaknesses sections, but a lot of different things factor into it. While the experiences that he and his people have had with humanity are the primary reasons it can take a lot for him to begin opening up to those of outside species, it is also due to culture and upbringing. His species is very reclusive, preferring to exist in unknowns in the universe, as the more you know about something the easier it is to combat it or take advantage of it; as a result they are very selective about the beings that they trust with information about themselves, and Glacius is no exception. Only when people repeatedly prove themselves to be worthy of his trust will he gradually start letting them in. The final reason that Glacius can be so mistrustful is that it simply comes with the job description; being a galactic marshal means that being skeptical of other people and withholding information about himself, his people, or his goals just comes with the territory. As you might expect, this distrust in a world as strange and harrowing as Hadriel can often come at expense to Glacius himself until it is unlearned, and he comes to accept that he will have to rely on other people.

SAMPLES
Action Log Sample:
It has been a long time--too long, stuck on earth, unable to return to his people until his duty has been complete and his technology has been recovered. Too long that he has played along with the savage games of humankind, always attempting to lay him low and prove his species to be inferior despite his iron will. The end of his journey kneels before him now, battered into submission throughout the course of yet another bitter struggle that the alien has little taste for; what matters is that he has finally tracked down and bested the thief and assassin known as Sadira. This is the one that gutted the carcass of his crashed ship and put both humanity and his people's lives in danger, the one that delivered his technology to Ultratech and in doing so, violated one of the tenants of the 88 Decrees. And while that violation of his people's law is something that the alien cannot abide, it is the callous disregard for life displayed by both the organization and the individual that rankles the most in his pounding hearts.

The wind howls and flurries of snow whip through the freezing air around the marshal and his quarry, and Glacius stares down at the power cell still clutched in Sadira's hand, tension left over from the conflict beginning to gradually ebb out of him. How odd, that such a small thing can cause so much trouble... and unfortunately, he has not seen the end of it yet. For the assassin refuses to yield, and the alien discovers that the end of one journey simply leads to the beginning of another: she bypasses the safeties on the fold core using samples of his genetic code taken during the battle, and uses the powers cell she has also stolen from his ship to charge it, opening a wormhole to... elsewhere.

Glacius only has a few moments to think before he is sucked in through that portal--how strange, it feels like he is being pulled through a door of some sort-- and then everything goes black. But in those last few moments of consciousness, the alien feels not anger nor fear. Just as he has faced and overcome every challenge that has been thrown at him thus far, so it will be with whatever lays on the other side of this door. He will cling fast to hope and to courage, and one day, no matter what he must face... he will see his people once more.
